Student Experience
A vibrant web of student support services and student-led organizations, all online, building community and broadening horizons.
Student Advising
Academic advising services are offered to students throughout the academic year. Each student is assigned an advisor. The Office of Student Affairs advises students who have completed fewer than 30 credit hours and who have not yet declared their major. Students who have declared their academic majors are advised by faculty advisors from their academic department.
Student Organisations
Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), otherwise known as clubs, are an important part of AUAF’s community. RSOs are designed and led by students, and any student may join any organization that appeals to them.
Programming sessions around stress management, emotional health and wellness and others are provided for students. One on one emotional support is available to students, who may schedule as many sessions as they wish, subject to availability. Group check-in sessions are provided following specific situations that may have caused emotional distress/stress, such as earthquakes. Training is provided for staff and faculty regarding psychological first aid and emotional support to better asset faculty in the classroom.
The Student Government Association, SGA, provides an opportunity for students to hold student leadership positions for the year. SGA supports the development of student clubs and organizations and provides assistance with programming. SGA holds virtual programs and events; It’s a space for students to come to and share interests, concerns, and learn from one another. Each new SGA executive board comes up with their own goals for the academic year. The goals are focused on providing student engagement, support and increasing communication between students and their needs and administration. Students are voted in through an election process by their peers.
AUAF provides free individual and group tutoring for all AUAF students seeking assistance. Tutors who are student volunteers support student understanding of assignments by teaching concepts similar to those assigned, or by using additional examples.
Current students and alumni can schedule one on one appointments to explore post graduate opportunities such as advanced degrees or careers. AUAF offers support with resumes/CV, cover letters, applications for jobs and graduate school, and interview support. The Office of Student Services offers regular programming on career development and entrepreneurship, and offers the Jobscan platform to both students and alumni for free.
All newly admitted students participate in a peer mentoring program. Upper division students may apply to become peer mentors, and are assigned to a newly admitted student for one year. Peer mentors are trained on numerous leadership skills such as communication, active listening and more. They conduct one on one check ins, conduct group meetings, provide referrals and offer general support to underclassmen.
These are offered to provide a space for each of the men and women of AUAF to come together in community, share, learn and grow from one another.
The Writing Center provides one-on-one English tutoring for students. Tutors may assist with assignments, drafts, and teach organizational skills for writing by helping students achieve their own goals and develop skills in a non-directive way.
