Debate Seminar Sharpens Communication Skills

On July 18, the AUAF Speakers Club hosted an interactive seminar for students interested in debate skills. The seminar featured the Business Department’s Associate Professor of Practice Shoaib Rahim, who excelled as a distinguished debater during his undergraduate studies in Malaysia, competing in nationals and earning a ranking among Asia's top 10 speakers.

Debate, according to Professor Rahim, is about persuasion and strategic communication, not just merely expressing opinions. He taught students about the British parliamentary debating format, emphasizing the importance of understanding rules and explaining how teams propose or oppose motions in British parliamentary debating regardless of personal beliefs, fostering respect for diverse viewpoints. Students then practiced British parliamentary debating, applying the techniques discussed and asking interactive questions throughout the session.

The seminar provided valuable insights into debating techniques and encouraged participants to cultivate these skills for personal and academic growth.
