Why should I attend the American University of Afghanistan?
The University offers high academic standards, modern facilities, professional training, and an international atmosphere that simply are not found in other universities in Afghanistan. It is also an open and transparent organization that is independent from government control.
What degree programs are offered by the American University of Afghanistan?
The University currently offers two undergraduate degree programs, one in Business Administration and the other in Information Technology. As part of their degree programs, students also take classes in subjects as diverse as English composition, mathematics, the natural sciences, arts and humanities, and the social sciences. Other academic programs are being planned.
How long will my degree take?
The American University is modeled on the American system of higher education, in which an undergraduate degree will typically take four years of full-time study. While a degree program is a substantial commitment of time and resources, the benefits of a high-quality, internationally-recognized degree will stay with graduates for the rest of their lives.
How much will my degree cost?
A student in the Undergraduate Program or the Foundation Studies Program can expect to pay approximatly 250,000 AFS per year for a full course load (ten courses). For part-time students, costs per course are 25,000 AFS. Living expenses are the responsibility of the student.

Can I take classes in the evening?
Yes. The American University of Afghanistan offers a wide variety of classes in the evenings, allowing students to work as they study.
What are admissions requirements?
To apply to the Undergraduate Program, candidates must provide proof of English proficiency, a completed application form (including personal essay), a letter of referral, and high school transcripts from high school. What level of English proficiency do I need to enroll in the Undergraduate Program?
To be admitted into the Undergraduate Program, a candidate must take an English proficiency test and the achieve one of the following scores:
- 500 on the paper-based TOEFL.
- 61 on the internet-based TOEFL.
- 6 on the International English-Language Testing System.
- Three years at a high school where the language of instruction is English.
Candidates who do not have the required test scores can enroll in the University’s Foundations Study Program, which provides intensive academic training in English, allowing students to be successful in English-language programs of higher education.
How long do I have to stay in Foundations Studies Program before enrolling in the Undergraduate Program?
A successful score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test is the only requirement to move from the Foundations Studies Program to the Undergraduate Program. The time a candidate requires to be successful on the TOEFL test is dependent on their level of English when they enroll in the Program, their ability to learn and study, and the effort they put into improving their English.
When and where can I take the Test of English as a Foreign Language?

If I fail or do not complete the Foundations Studies Program, can I still enroll in the Undergraduate Program?
Yes. The only requirement to enroll in the Undergraduate Program is a successful TOEFL score. If you fail the Foundations Studies Program but pass the TOEFL test, you are still eligible to enroll in the Undergraduate Program.
