10,000 Women Launches Entrepreneurship Training

The 10,000 Women Business Women’s Training Program launched its second year at The American University in Afghanistan (AUAF), providing entrepreneurship training and support to Afghan women. The program will assist Afghan women in gaining higher levels of financial self-sustainability and further contributing to the development of the Afghan economy.

In a statement to participants, Managing Director and Global Head of Corporate Engagement at Goldman Sachs, wrote of the program, "Educated women, active in their local economies, can not only empower themselves, but more importantly, foster opportunity and prosperity throughout their community. You are all a testament to this, and your presence today is inspiring."

The first course includes 20 women from the business, government, and civil society communities in Afghanistan. They will receive training in subjects such as marketing, ethics, finance and leadership in society. After successful completion of the training program, participants will be entitled to additional benefits such as membership in a 10, 000 Women alumni association, access to a business resource center, training and employment possibilities, as well as opportunities to participate in exclusive networking events.

One of the student participants in the training course stated, "My goal is to be an entrepreneur. It is time women stepped up to the challenge and made an active contribution to the development of this country. Through women’s active involvement in society, our nation can live up to its potential.”

In addition to owning or starting businesses, other program participants are working for leading organizations such as Azizi Bank, Ministry of Women’s Affairs, USAID, Afghan Women’s Business Federation, Ministry of Development, the United Nations and others.

The Senior Program Manager said of the program, "The women enrolled in Goldman Sachs’ 10,000 Women Business Training program are leading the way for women entrepreneurs in their country and are an inspiration to young Afghan women around them. This program will do much to advance the economic status of women and, in turn, their families and their nation. "

Training is developed by Thunderbird School of Global Management in the US, ranked number one by Financial Times in international management. The 10,000 Women program is supported by leading global investment bank Goldman Sachs and the Goldman Sachs Foundation. Program activities in Afghanistan are hosted by AUAF.
