The library at the American University of Afghanistan provides electronic access via the internet to thousands of journals and journal articles, many in full text. There are no paper/printed journals in the library.
None of the following databases require passwords. However, EBSCO Host and Springerlink require on campus access only.
Journals
Afghanistan Digital Library
This project will ultimately make available the entire publishing output of Afghanistan, searchable by title, author, subject, and date and readable via electronic media and the internet. The project will begin with the earliest books and proceed chronologically.
DOAJ – Directory of Open Access Journals
This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. The aim is to cover all subjects and languages. There are now 2,811 journals in the directory. Currently 857 journals are searchable at article level. Currently 144,233 articles are included in the DOAJ service.
EBSCO Host
The American University of Afghanistan pays over 850,000AFS per year so students and instructors/staff can access EBSCO Host.
EBSCO is an American company that publishes, provides subscriptions to and offers access to print and electronic information. EBSCO is best known for its giant database of journals and journal articles. Over 20,000 journals covering a wide range of disciplines are surveyed, such as business, humanities, health, social studies, history, and communications. The majority of millions of articles are available in full text.
EBSCO also offers Newspaper Source, which provides cover-to-cover full text for 35 national and international newspapers as well as selective full text for 375 regional (U.S.) newspapers. Some full text television and radio news transcripts are also provided.
HighWire Press
Start a fee account at HighWire Press. HighWire is the largest archive of free full-text science on Earth. As of October 2008, HighWire Press has assisted in the online publication of 4,877,403 free full-text articles, of which 1,965,897 are free. These articles are drawn from 1,186 journals.
The National Academies Press
The National Academies Press (NAP) was created by the National Academies to publish the reports issued by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council, all operating under a charter granted by the Congress of the United States.
The NAP publishes more than 200 books a year on a wide range of topics in science, engineering, and health. It sponsors more than 4,000 books online. This is the right place for up-to-date information on everything from space science to animal nutrition.
Open J-Gate
Search or browse by journal title to access 4,455 freely available open access professional and industry journals. 2,403 of these journals have been peer-reviewed. Almost every subject, from archeology to religion, is covered.
PLoS - Public Library of Science
PLoS is a nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource. Everything published by PLoS is freely available online for users to read, download, copy, distribute, and utilize (with attribution) any way they wish.
SpringerLink
The Spingerlink Publishing Group has graciously allowed the American University of Afghanistan free use of its database. Tens of thousands of books, publications, and journals have been surveyed. Thus, the database can offer full text access to millions of journal articles covering the fields of science, medicine, technology, architecture, behavioral science, computer science, mathematics, and more. The science libraries of both Russia and China are also featured.
