Who can work at the American University of Afghanistan?

What is the risk to foreign nationals working in Afghanistan?
Although Kabul is for the most part a safe city, the University takes a number of security precautions on behalf of its staff. Additionally, international staff are entitled to an augmentation of their salary due to the security risk. For more information, please click here to contact Human Resources.

Where can I get more information about working in Afghanistan?
A number of websites provide information about Afghanistan, its culture, and its customs. When an offer of employment is made, the University will provide prospective employees with detailed information on the security situation, the University, and life in Kabul.

Does the University offer internships?
Yes, the University offers internships to ambitious and qualified individuals. Interns are very valuable assets to the University and are fully integrated into everyday work, taking on similar responsibilities as University staff. At this point, interns our paid per-diem. Interns also receive benefits such as housing, transportation and insurance.

Where do international staff live while in Kabul?
The University provides accommodation for all international staff while in Afghanistan. Presently international staff live in shared accommodations. For individuals who prefer to find their own accommodations, the University does not provide a housing allowance at this time.

Can I maintain the same lifestyle that I would have at home?
Kabul has a large number of expatriates, working for the various international and non-governmental organizations. There are a number of shops and restaurants in Kabul that cater to the expatriate population. Housing is also maintained at Western standards.

Differences in lifestyle arise primarily from security precautions. There are regular security checks that international staff must undergo, for example. The University makes every effort to ensure that security precautions are not overly restrictive or intrusive.

What about health care?
There is quality health care available in Kabul. For staff who require specific medical procedures, world-class health facilities are available in Dubai, a short flight away. Information on benefits can be obtained from Human Resources.
