Overall governance of the University is entrusted to a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees. The Board approves major financial decisions as well as policies and procedures. The Board, in turn, is guided by best practices in higher education and the University’s Vision and Mission Statement. They also have a role in fundraising and lobbying on behalf of the University.

Also, the Board appoints the President and Chief Executive Officer. It is the final authority for the duties, salaries, and benefits of both the academic and administrative staff.

The Board is composed of academic, business, and political leaders from Afghanistan, the United State of America, countries of the European Union, and elsewhere. Current Board membership, now at 20, will expand.

Decisions by the Board of Trustees are governed by a complex set of bylaws. Meetings take place a number of times each year in such diverse places as Kabul, Dubai, Paris, and Washington D.C. Decisions are taken by majority vote, with each member of the Board having one vote.
