The most widely-used standardized test for non-native English speakers seeking to enter an English-language program of higher education is the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The American University of Afghanistan is an approved test site for the internet-based TOEFL (iBT).
The TOEFL test measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written and heard in university settings. It is an internationally-recognized test used by English-speaking institutions of higher education in their admissions processes.
The test consists of four components:
- Reading. Measures the ability of the candidate to understand academic reading material.
- Listening. Measures the ability of the candidate to understand spoken English.
- Speaking. Measures the ability of the candidate to speak English in an academic context.
- Writing. Measures the ability of the candidate to write at an academic level.
