The American University of Afghanistan is headed by a President and Chief Executive Officer. The President is responsible for operating the University and is also its spokesperson.

The President is appointed by the Board of Trustees in a democratic manner. Once candidates are identified after a worldwide search, they are considered by the Board of Trustees and members vote on the candidate they prefer. Criteria for electing a President and Chief Executive Officer include education and past experience.
