The American University of Afghanistan is a private, non-governmental, and not-for-profit institution of advanced learning, the first such in Afghanistan’s history. The University stands strong for academic freedom and is non-political, non-sectarian, co-educational, student-centered, corruption-free, internationally-supported, and ethical in all dealings. Opened in 2006, it is Afghanistan’s highest quality university. Higher education for the professions, applied general studies, and English usage define most academic programs.

Operating efficiently and transparently while growing rapidly, the American University of Afghanistan is guided by important principles:

  • Freedom and responsibility, democracy and fairness
  • National and professional leadership
  • Equal opportunity for men, women and qualified students with diverse backgrounds
  • Preparation for world competitive careers
  • High achievement, international quality and support for national reconstruction
